Council has unanimously approved a this program and other relief measures like water bill payment deferral to help residents and small businesses through these difficult times. The Property Tax Deferral Program extends the tax deadlines to October 30th. It will assist small businesses with an assessed property value of up to 7.5 million – which captures 91% of commercial properties in the City of Ottawa. Commercial and residential property owners who will benefit from this deferral are urged to pass it down to their tenants as they are the ones who desperately need the flexibility in the coming months to make ends meet. The City has no legal authority to to enforce commercial landlords pass the deferral measures to tenants. However, property owners with tenants who do not pass on the deferral are deemed ineligible and all taxes, penalty and interest are payable immediately.
