Advocacy

All Barrhaven businesses operating in commercial units, as well as local mall owners, are automatically part of the BBIA. As a business owner, you can influence what happens in our district by providing feedback, getting involved with our BIA Board, Board committees and special event committees.

The Barrhaven BIA acts as a voice for the business community and establishes important relationships with other community voices, such as City council, municipal departments, local community groups (schools, churches, citizen groups, etc.) and institutions (chambers of commerce, committees of council, etc.). The BIA forum can be used to convey community concerns to council and help prompt council to pursue policies and activities to promote and strengthen the community and its unique identity. Likewise, it can provide a feedback mechanism for council issues.

Healthy local economy

The BBIA assists with fostering local economic development and revitalization in our area, stimulating new impetus for tourism and investment in the wider community. Increased business activity improves both the municipal and sales tax base and supports public services of benefit to all. Fostering community engagement can strengthen and build community interest, spirit, pride and networks well beyond the boundaries of the BIA.

Business Recruitment

The BBIA works with commercial and industrial property owners to help ensure that available space is occupied, and that an optimum business and service mix is achieved and maintained. BIA-initiated improvements and activities may help to create and sustain a more vibrant economic environment within an area, which may lead to an increased demand for retail and office space, a decrease in commercial vacancy rates and an increase in property values. It is our priority to work with property owners to bring high-value employment to Barrhaven’s business parks so as to provide daytime, weekday customers for local businesses and to reduce the amount of consumer leakage outside of Barrhaven.

Trusted representation

The BBIA has assembled a team of trusted supporters of the local business district who are active in the local community. Our Board consists of representatives from a number of different sectors; real estate, grocery, restaurant, coffee, banking, pharmacy, fitness, insurance and accounting. Our experienced Executive Director, staff and Board members work closely with City staff, local Councilors- both of whom sit on our Board, business professionals, community and service groups and other relevant stakeholders.
