Strategic Pillars Part 3: Leadership
Part 3 in a series highlighting our 2025-2030 strategic pillars: LEADERSHIP
At the Barrhaven Business Improvement Area (BBIA), leadership isn’t just a title—it’s a strategic pillar that defines how we serve, influence, and elevate our vibrant business community.
Leading with Purpose and Vision
Under the dynamic leadership of our Board and Executive Director, the BBIA has consistently positioned itself as a proactive and trusted voice for local businesses. With over 20 years of service to our community, the BBIA leadership team embodies the very essence of what it means to lead with purpose.
We have built a reputation as collaborative, strategic and tireless advocates, known for bringing people together—whether it’s through innovative youth employment workshops, public art installations, or initiatives that celebrate diversity and inclusion in our community.
Our Goal: Stewardship that Inspires Action
The Leadership Pillar is grounded in a clear goal: to effectively lead, influence, and visibly steward the business community. This involves not just representing Barrhaven’s business interests, but also actively shaping policy, fostering strategic relationships, and amplifying our collective voice.
How We Achieve It
- Strategic Partnerships: We prioritize meaningful relationships with civic leaders, business owners, and community stakeholders, aligning our goals with municipal and provincial policies. Our Executive Director, Andrea Steenbakkers’s active role on the Ontario BIA Association’s (OBIAA) Board and as a former Chair of the Ottawa Coalition of BIAs (OCOBIA) has ensured our region remains connected, informed, and influential.
- Communications with Impact: We’re enhancing BBIA’s visibility through targeted PR campaigns and thought leadership. Whether through social media engagement or policy publications, our message is clear: Barrhaven means business.
- Data-Driven Advocacy: With regular economic surveys, onsite visits and research initiatives, we’re putting numbers behind our advocacy, ensuring our decisions and priorities are grounded in what matters most to our members.
- Championing Change: We’re building a network of passionate advocates across sectors. Through testimonials, mentorships, and ambassador programs, we’re turning community pride into collective action.
What Success Looks Like
By 2026, success will mean stronger alignment with public policy, more collaboration on regional projects, greater recognition as a thought leader, and deeper engagement with our local business champions. We’re laying the groundwork for initiatives that will carry us well into 2026 and beyond—because leadership is not just about what we do today, but how we shape the future.

The BBIA is more than a business organization. It’s a leadership engine for Barrhaven’s economic and social future. Whether you’re a business owner, community advocate, or local leader, there’s a place for you in this movement.
