Honouring the Past While Building the Future: Exciting Initiatives Underway at the Barrhaven Legion
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 641 is preparing for an exciting season that blends remembrance, community spirit, and an ambitious vision for the future. This fall, the Barrhaven Legion is inviting the community to take part in two significant initiatives that will honour Canada’s Veterans while helping secure a permanent home for one of Barrhaven’s most active community organizations.
A New Veteran Memorial Banner Program
One of the most meaningful additions this year is the launch of the Branch 641 Veteran Memorial Banner Program.
The initiative gives families, friends, and community members the opportunity to permanently recognize Veterans who have served Canada with courage and dedication. Whether honouring someone who served in the past, continues to serve today, or made the ultimate sacrifice, each banner serves as a visible reminder of the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms Canadians enjoy.
Beginning in mid-October, up to 30 Veteran Memorial Banners will line the route from the corner of Malvern Drive and Sherway Drive, extending past John McCrae Secondary School toward Fable Street. The location was carefully chosen, placing the banners directly in front of the Remembrance Memorial at John McCrae Secondary School during the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day.
The display will create a powerful visual tribute that will be seen by thousands of residents, students attending nearby schools, and visitors to the Walter Baker Sports Centre throughout the remembrance season.
Each banner costs $250, which includes production, installation, and removal. After the display period concludes in mid-November, the banners will be cleaned and returned to the Veteran or their family as a lasting keepsake.
The program represents a unique opportunity for local families to ensure the stories and service of their loved ones continue to be recognized for generations to come.

Celebrating a Century of Service and Looking Ahead
This year also marks an extraordinary milestone for the Royal Canadian Legion as the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary across Canada.
Since its founding in 1925, the Royal Canadian Legion has served Veterans and their families, promoted remembrance, and strengthened communities from coast to coast. Today, the organization includes more than 270,000 members across approximately 1,350 branches, continuing a proud tradition of advocacy, support, and service.
Barrhaven’s own Branch 641 has become one of the community’s success stories.
Opening its doors in 2005 with just 50 members, the branch has grown dramatically over the past 21 years and now boasts a membership of more than 750. That growth reflects the important role the Legion continues to play—not only for Veterans, but also as a gathering place for community events, remembrance activities, charitable initiatives, and local fundraising.
Building the Next Chapter
Success, however, has brought new challenges.
As membership has expanded, Branch 641 has once again outgrown its current facility. With monthly rent climbing, Legion leadership has begun planning for the future by pursuing an ambitious goal: purchasing land and constructing a permanent clubhouse that will allow the branch to continue serving Veterans and the Barrhaven community for decades to come.
To help make that vision a reality, Branch 641 will host a special anniversary celebration and fundraising event on September 19, marking both the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion and the 21st anniversary of Barrhaven’s Branch 641.
Funds raised during the celebration will go directly toward the Branch’s Land and Building Trust Fund, bringing the community one step closer to a new permanent home.

A Community Built on Service
The Royal Canadian Legion’s mission remains as relevant today as it was more than a century ago: to serve Veterans and their dependents, promote remembrance, and support communities across Canada.
From the annual Poppy Campaign to local charitable initiatives, Branch 641 continues to invest back into the community while providing support for Veterans and their families.
This fall, residents have an opportunity to become part of that story – whether by honouring a Veteran through the new Memorial Banner Program or by supporting the Legion’s vision for a permanent future in Barrhaven.
