A periodontist is a dentist specialist who has completed a university post-graduate specialty program in periodontics. In order to become a periodontist, it is necessary to study for three additional years after graduating dental school. Periodontics is focused on the heath of the tissues supporting the teeth, including the gums and the bone. Periodontist are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. During specialty training, periodontists learn management and treatment of periodontal diseases, including gingivitis, periodontitis and gum recession. Periodontists are also trained in the surgical placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth.
In Canada, all periodontists must complete and pass board certification by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada to be licensed as specialists in Periodontology.
While most patients are referred to our office by a general dentist, patients can refer themselves. Patients who have concerns about periodontal disease, gingival recession, or would like a dental implant, are welcome to book an appointment with our office directly.
