Strategic Pillar 4: Mobility
PART 4 in a series highlighting our 2025-2030 strategic pillars: Building a More Connected Barrhaven. The BBIA’s Vision for Better Mobility.
As one of Ottawa’s fastest-growing communities, Barrhaven is entering an exciting new chapter—and the Barrhaven BIA is at the forefront of shaping it. With our five-year Strategic Plan in place, we’ve made Mobility a cornerstone of our vision for a more vibrant, accessible, and connected business district.
Why Mobility Matters
The ability to move easily and safely within and between our commercial districts isn’t just about convenience—it’s about community growth, economic opportunity, and sustainability. Whether you’re a parent pushing a stroller, a student biking to a part-time job, or a commuter hopping on the bus to get to work, better mobility options directly impact your daily life and overall experience in Barrhaven. That’s why the BBIA focuses on making Barrhaven easier and more enjoyable to access by car, transit, bicycle, or foot.
Our 2025-2030 Mobility Goals
Over the next 5 years, the BBIA is prioritizing several activities to improve movement throughout Barrhaven, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, advocacy, and awareness:
1. Supporting Multi-Modal Access
We’re working closely with City Councillors and community stakeholders to support the development of enhanced pedestrian pathways, cycling lanes, and public transit routes. This includes:
- Advocating for inclusive design improvements
- Attending public consultations on mobility infrastructure
- Promoting user feedback to better understand needs and priorities
We’re also exploring future opportunities like bike-share and car-share programs, and improved accessibility for residents with disabilities.
2. Improving Circulation Between Commercial Districts
Traffic congestion and limited flow are ongoing concerns in our downtown core. The BBIA continues to support solutions aimed at improving traffic circulation and reducing bottlenecks, making it easier for people to shop, dine, and access services without stress.
3. Raising Awareness of Transportation Alternatives
We’re amplifying the City of Ottawa’s messaging around sustainable travel and working to promote these options locally. Better awareness leads to better adoption, and we’re focused on helping residents see the value in leaving the car behind when possible.
4. Creating Safer Routes for Cyclists and Pedestrians
Mobility isn’t just about movement; it’s about safety. We support initiatives that improve visibility, signage, and infrastructure for people walking and biking, especially families and children. In the years ahead, we’re looking at how recreational trails and community routes can serve as safe, practical, and beautiful connections throughout the neighbourhood.
5. Enhancing Transit Connectivity
We’re advocating for more frequent bus routes, express services, and better transit access between residential areas and Barrhaven’s key commercial hubs. Reliable public transportation is essential for equitable economic access and a thriving local economy.
Long-Term Vision: Moving Toward a 15-Minute Community
As Barrhaven grows, so too does our ambition. Our long-term strategic plan envisions a Barrhaven where residents can live, work, shop, and play within 15 minutes of home. That means less time commuting, more time connecting with community, and a healthier environment for all. To get there, we need infrastructure that supports:
- Underground and shared parking solutions in our future Civic Complex
- Transit-first design in our downtown core
- Seamless walking and biking routes that connect neighbourhoods to businesses, parks, and schools
- More opportunities to WORK IN BARRHAVEN.
Let’s Keep Barrhaven Moving
We know that real mobility improvements require collaboration, advocacy, and persistent community dialogue. The BBIA is committed to being your voice in these conversations, championing the infrastructure, policies, and priorities that will create a more connected Barrhaven.
