Celebrating Halloween Safely in 2020!

Just because trick or treating is not recommended doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate Halloween. Halloween is Saturday which means that you have the whole day to have some spooky fun! This is a great opportunity for family time and just think of the amazing memories you can make. Just because things are different doesn’t mean that we can’t make the most of it in #MyBarrhaven! There are also lots of great ways to support our local small businesses on the spookiest of days. Here are some great ideas to celebrate safely at home:

  • Plan a Spooky Movie Night:

Turn the lights down low and settle in for some scary movies! If you have littler kids, not to worry, there are lots of great Halloween movies for children too. Set the scene with decorations in your space and cuddle up with blankets. PRO TIP: Order in a special dinner; many of our local restaurants have Halloween promotions and meal deals available for delivery or pick up.

  • Stage a Halloween Photoshoot:

Trick or treating is not the only place for costumes! Get your little ghouls and goblins all dressed up and take photos to share with friends and neighbours. Create a backdrop with decorations and capture some great photos! PRO TIP: You can get everything you need from costumes to props right here in Barrhaven and you can take it one step further by getting those photos printed to send to family and friends.

  • Do a Halloween Candy Hunt:

Just like Easter, hide candy around the house. Get the kids dressed up and have them explore to find their goodies. Younger kids could even Trick or Treat from their stuffed animals; each stuffie could hold a different treat! PRO TIP: Step up the hunt with some sweet treats from a local bakery or cafe; Halloween themed cupcakes, cookies, or pastries make for a delicious reward!

  • Build your own Haunted House:

Most kids love a good haunted house and you can create one at home for your whole family to enjoy! Choose one space in your home and go crazy making it as spooky as possible. Older children may even want to help with the decorating. Looking for ideas? A quick Google search can help you with great and easy haunted house tips. PRO TIP: Shop local for all your supplies. There’s no need to buy expensive props – be creative.

  • Host a Mini Halloween Party with Those You Live With:

Parties don’t need to be a lot of fun! Go all out with spooky food, decorations, and music. We often don’t have time for things like this when Halloween falls on a week night and there is such a rush to get the kids out the door to trick or treat after school so take advantage of this great opportunity. Combine all the other ideas to make it a special day (or weekend!).
